Abraham Kimeli, a man who presented himself as a top government aide, has been arrested after swindling a job seeker of Sh130,000 through a carefully planned scheme.
Detectives revealed that Kimeli had been posing as the personal assistant to the Head of Public Service, using lies and fake promises to lure unsuspecting victims.
His arrest followed weeks of investigations that traced his online activities and fraudulent communications.
The case dates back to February 2024, when a woman working in Lebanon came across a TikTok user who called himself “City Tycoon.” The woman, nearing the end of her contract and worried about her future, hoped to find a way to secure stable employment back home in Kenya.
She reached out to the man, seeking help in getting a permanent job. What seemed like a genuine conversation quickly turned into a trap, as the fraudster skillfully took advantage of her vulnerability.
Kimeli introduced himself as a well-connected government official, claiming he was in a position to secure job opportunities for those who had the right contacts. He gave the woman his phone number and slowly built her trust.
To make his story believable, he shared what appeared to be an official document from the Public Service Commission, promising that her name had been shortlisted for a job.
The woman believed she had found the right person to help her and followed his instructions without questioning his credibility.
As the talks progressed, Kimeli began asking for money under the pretext of facilitation fees and processing charges. He convinced the woman that these payments were necessary to complete the recruitment process.
Trusting him, she enlisted the help of her employer in Lebanon, who sent the money through Western Union. Altogether, she lost Sh130,000 in the process, only to later realize that the job did not exist and the man she trusted had vanished.
Her attempts to reach him proved futile, and it was at that point she reported the matter. Detectives launched investigations, using digital trails and financial records to follow Kimeli’s activities.
The evidence led them to his location, and he was finally apprehended. Authorities confirmed that he is in custody, facing charges of fraud and impersonation.
The arrest brings relief to the victim and serves as a warning to others who might be tempted to trust strangers online, especially when job promises are involved. Police have urged the public to be cautious and verify the authenticity of any job offers that require upfront payments.
Kimeli will now face the consequences of his actions in court, marking the end of his deceptive scheme that preyed on desperate job seekers.
