Cyprian Nyakundi recently highlighted a major development in one of the country’s most talked-about murder cases.
He pointed out that Ebel Ochieng, also known as Dave Calo and a close aide to Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, is facing murder charges over the death of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were. This connection has brought fresh attention to a killing that shook Kenya’s political landscape.
On April 30, 2025, gunmen on a motorcycle ambushed Were’s car near the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road in Nairobi.
He had just left Parliament and was caught in traffic when the attackers smashed his window and shot him five times. The bullets caused severe internal injuries that led to his death.
Police described the attack as targeted and well-planned, backed by CCTV footage showing Were being trailed from Parliament buildings.
Ebel Ochieng stands among five suspects now charged with the murder. The group also includes William Imoli Shigali (alias Imo), Edwin Odour Odhiambo (alias Machuani), Isaac Kuria Chege (alias Kush), and Allan Omondi Ogola. Prosecutors say the men conspired in the killing.
Evidence includes mobile phone records, witness statements, and financial links. Ochieng, who serves on the Lake Basin Development Authority board, was reportedly in contact with others involved around the time of the shooting.
Court proceedings have been intense. Some suspects, including Ochieng, pleaded not guilty at Kibera High Court. Bail applications were turned down, especially after reports that Ochieng allegedly threatened a prosecutor during one session.
He was placed in solitary confinement for a period. The Director of Public Prosecutions later consolidated all five cases into one.
