A visit to a boyfriend in police custody turned into an arrest for a 26-year-old woman after officers at Buruburu Police Station discovered bhang hidden inside a loaf of bread she had brought for him.
Bernice Achieng had reportedly visited the station to see her boyfriend, who was being held by police, and asked officers at the report office desk to deliver the loaf to him. However, the unsealed package raised suspicion, prompting officers to carry out a search before allowing it to reach the detainee.
During the search, officers discovered five rolls of bhang and a matchbox hidden deep inside the loaf of bread. The discovery led to a further search of Achieng, during which seven additional rolls of bhang were allegedly found in the pocket of her jacket.
In total, police recovered 12 rolls of bhang from the bread and the woman’s clothing. Achieng was subsequently taken into custody as officers secured the recovered items, which are expected to be presented as exhibits in the case.
She is expected to be arraigned in court as police proceed with the necessary processing. Details of the boyfriend’s identity and the specific circumstances surrounding his detention were not provided in the statement.
The incident at Buruburu was among two separate operations in which police reported recovering suspected narcotic drugs and arresting individuals believed to be involved in their distribution.
In Thika, a motorcycle rider identified as John Mwangi, alias “Bombay,” was arrested following a chase that ended in a crash near Ree Supermarket in Kairi, Thika West.
According to the police account, Mwangi was riding a motorcycle with a female passenger when the two encountered a police roadblock. The rider allegedly attempted to escape after spotting the officers, accelerating through the area in an effort to avoid arrest.
The chase came to an end when Mwangi reportedly lost control of the motorcycle after misjudging a speed bump near the supermarket. The motorcycle crashed, allowing police to apprehend the rider.
His female passenger, however, managed to escape into the surrounding crowd during the confusion that followed the accident.
Officers then searched Mwangi’s cargo and recovered 300 rolls of bhang. They also found an additional three kilograms of the suspected narcotic substance wrapped in yellow polythene and secured to the motorcycle seat.
The recovery prompted Mwangi’s arrest, and he was taken to Kimuchu Police Station, where he is undergoing processing pending arraignment.
The two incidents highlight police operations targeting the movement and distribution of suspected narcotic drugs in different areas. In Buruburu, officers discovered drugs concealed in an ordinary food item, while in Thika, the recovery followed a motorcycle chase and crash.
Achieng and Mwangi remain in police custody as they await the next steps in the legal process.
