The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot over the murder of prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, nearly a year after the lawyer was shot dead in Nairobi.
Detectives believe Cheruiyot was the gunman involved in the fatal attack and have linked a firearm issued to him to the crime through ballistic examination.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 24, the DCI said the arrest followed an intensive investigation that had been ongoing since Mbobu was killed on September 9, 2025.
The lawyer was shot while driving home from work along Magadi Road in Nairobi in what investigators described as a targeted attack.
According to the investigative agency, detectives recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot around the time of the incident.
The firearm was subjected to ballistic examination, which established that it had been used in the shooting that claimed Mbobu’s life.
The DCI described the finding as a significant breakthrough in the case, saying it had strengthened the evidence being gathered against the suspects.
The ballistic findings are expected to form part of the evidence presented as the investigation progresses.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. Following an intensive and painstaking investigation over the past year, detectives have identified and arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, suspected of being the gunman who fatally shot the lawyer,” the agency stated.
The investigation has also brought Inspector Kenneth Sang into focus. Detectives have named Sang as another suspect, alleging that he was involved in coordinating the operation that led to Mbobu’s killing.
The inspector has also been linked by authorities to the murder of clinical psychologist Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was shot dead in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on July 29, 2026. Police said Sang allegedly coordinated communication with a suspect who is already in custody in connection with Mutiso’s murder.
According to the DCI, the suspect is Rose Mbithe, who is being held as part of investigations into the death of the clinical psychologist.
The agency stated that Sang remains at large and that efforts to locate and arrest him have been intensified.
“Detectives have also established that Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, allegedly coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe, who is already in police custody in connection with the murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso,” the DCI said.
Cheruiyot remains in police custody as detectives complete the necessary processing ahead of his arraignment in court. His arrest marks a major development in the investigation into the lawyer’s death, although the case is still subject to further inquiries and court proceedings.
The DCI said investigations into both murders remain active, with detectives pursuing additional leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents. Investigators are also working to determine the alleged motive, planning and execution of the attacks, as well as the possible involvement of other individuals.
