Safaricom Announces System Maintenance Affecting All Mpesa Services

Safaricom has announced a planned system maintenance that will temporarily impact all M-Pesa services.

The maintenance is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 10, starting at 11:00 p.m., and will run until Wednesday, September 11, at 3:30 a.m. During this period, all M-Pesa transactions will be unavailable, including money transfers, bill payments, and withdrawals.

However, other Safaricom services such as calls, SMS, and mobile data will remain unaffected.

This maintenance is part of Safaricom’s continuous efforts to improve service quality.

The company has stated that the late-night scheduling aims to minimize disruption to users.

With over 30 million M-Pesa users in Kenya alone, M-Pesa has become a cornerstone for mobile banking, allowing people to transfer money, pay for goods and services, and conduct business transactions.

Thus, ensuring the system’s stability and efficiency is critical.

This is not the first instance of such maintenance by Safaricom.

A similar exercise took place in August 2024, during which certain M-Pesa services were temporarily affected.

Regular system updates and maintenance are crucial for the smooth running of such a large-scale platform, as they allow for software upgrades, security patches, and the introduction of new features.

Safaricom also services a wider customer base in various African countries, making these updates essential to the broader functionality of the system.

The company’s emphasis on informing customers ahead of time is part of its effort to manage expectations and avoid inconveniences, as M-Pesa is a vital service relied upon by millions for everyday transactions.

Safaricom urges users to complete any necessary M-Pesa transactions before the maintenance window.
