A video circulating online has drawn attention after it appeared to show Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa visiting a traditional healer.
In the footage shared widely on social media, a man identified by some as the governor is seen undressed while taking part in what looks like a ritual.
The clip was posted by accounts including Nyakundi Report and quickly spread among Kenyan users. It shows the man in a setting with a person described as a traditional witch doctor.
Comments under the posts mixed surprise, criticism, and questions about the authenticity of the video.
This is not the first time such material has circulated. Similar claims surfaced in March 2024 when a man was charged in a Nairobi court with allegedly trying to extort money from the governor.
Court documents at the time linked the case to threats involving photos and a video said to have been recorded years earlier, during the period leading up to the 2022 elections.
Prosecutors claimed the material was used in an attempt to demand large sums of money. The governor was listed as a witness in that matter.Reports from that period stated that the alleged encounter took place in 2021.
A man known as William Simiyu Matere faced charges related to conspiracy and demanding property with menaces. Some accounts suggested payments had already been made before the arrest, though details remained limited to what was presented in court.
Governor Barasa, who serves as both Kakamega County Governor and ODM county chairman, has not issued a public statement on the latest sharing of the video. No independent verification has confirmed that the person in the circulating clip is definitely the governor, and some observers have urged caution until more facts emerge.
The renewed interest comes at a time when political discussions in western Kenya remain active. Social media users have reacted in different ways. Some expressed disappointment in elected leaders seeking traditional spiritual help. Others pointed out that beliefs in traditional practices remain common in many communities and should not automatically be treated as scandal.
A few questioned the timing of the video’s return to public view, noting past political rivalries in the region.
