A security operation in Kisumu has led to the arrest of two men suspected of being members of a criminal gang after detectives recovered a homemade firearm and several other items believed to be connected to criminal activities.
The operation was conducted by detectives from the DCI Operations Support Unit, the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and the GSU Tactical Team. The teams acted on intelligence that had linked the suspects to suspected criminal activities in the area.
The operation resulted in the arrest of Joseph Mwata Magak, also known as โBoyi Sampaโ, and Isaac Omondi Ojwangโ. Following their arrest, detectives carried out a search at Magakโs rented house in Mamboleo Pocho Estate in Kisumu.
The search led to the recovery of several items that investigators believe could assist them in establishing the activities of the suspects and their possible links to other crimes.
Among the items recovered from the house was a homemade firearm. Detectives also found a bow and four arrows, a panga and a toy gun. Five rolls of cannabis sativa were also recovered during the operation.
Other items found inside the house included a police siren, a pair of police boots, six pairs of jungle-green tactical trousers, a camouflage jacket and a pair of tactical boots. Detectives further recovered a bottle of gun oil and a Kenyan flag.
A Subaru front bumper was also among the items seized from the premises. Investigators are expected to examine the recovered property as they work to determine how it may have been obtained and whether it is connected to any reported criminal incidents.
The arrest of Magak has also drawn attention to an existing case before the courts.
According to investigators, he has an ongoing case involving attempted robbery with violence before the Nakuru Law Courts.
The latest arrests are part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to deal with suspected organised criminal activities in different parts of the country. Detectives are expected to continue investigating the two suspects and examining the recovered items before taking the matter to court.
The suspects are currently in custody as police complete the necessary processing ahead of their arraignment.
The recovered items have been secured and will be treated as exhibits as investigations continue.
Police have also appealed to members of the public to continue sharing information that can help security agencies identify and disrupt criminal activities. Investigators say timely information from residents can play an important role in preventing crime and helping them respond to suspected criminal networks.
The latest operation comes as security agencies continue to rely on intelligence-led operations to identify people suspected of involvement in crime.
In this case, information received by the security teams led them to the suspects before the search of the house uncovered the items now under investigation.
The two suspects will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations against them through the court process.
Their arrest and the recovery of the items do not by themselves amount to a conviction, and the evidence gathered by investigators will be presented before the court as the case proceeds.
