Governor Nathif Jama has come under public scrutiny after a video emerged showing him giving a sick woman KSh1,000 while visiting a hospital in Garissa County.
The governor was heard telling the woman, “Hakuna mambo ya SHA hapa,” a remark that quickly sparked debate online and drew criticism from many Kenyans who felt the gesture and accompanying statement were inappropriate given the challenges facing patients seeking healthcare services.
The video spread widely across social media platforms, attracting reactions from citizens, professionals, and political observers. While some viewed the governor’s action as an attempt to assist a patient in need, many others questioned both the amount given and the manner in which it was presented. Critics argued that the incident highlighted concerns about how some leaders engage with vulnerable citizens, especially when cameras are present.
Among those who reacted strongly was prominent lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who criticized the governor’s conduct and suggested that leaders should approach struggling Kenyans with greater humility and respect.
His comments added momentum to an already growing discussion about the relationship between political leaders and ordinary citizens.
The mention of SHA, the Social Health Authority, also became a major point of discussion. The health insurance system has faced criticism and confusion from some members of the public since its introduction, with many patients reporting challenges in accessing services. Because of this background, Governor Nathif’s remarks were interpreted by some people as dismissive of a system that many Kenyans rely on for medical support.
For critics, the issue was not simply the KSh1,000 that was given to the patient. Instead, they argued that leaders should focus on creating lasting solutions to healthcare challenges rather than offering small financial contributions during public visits.
Many social media users expressed the view that patients require reliable access to treatment, medicine, and insurance coverage rather than one-time assistance.
Governor Nathif is a seasoned public servant with years of experience in leadership. Before becoming the Governor of Garissa County, he served in various roles in both public service and the financial sector. His supporters describe him as an experienced administrator who has worked to improve services within the county.
However, the recent video has shifted attention from his leadership record to questions about public perception and leadership style.
The incident has sparked national conversation about dignity, healthcare access, and the responsibilities of elected leaders when interacting with citizens facing difficult circumstances.
