How Oparanya’s wife looted public funds while holding no official position

As per the reports shared by a popular news blog The Kenyan Times, Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and his wife are now at the center of a corruption scandal that reveals the deep-rooted greed and impunity they operated with.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has exposed how Oparanya’s wife pocketed nearly six million shillings from county coffers for a trip to Dallas, USA, that never even happened.

This brazen looting was facilitated by county officials who approved irregular payments without any accountability. It is yet another clear example of how public money meant for development was diverted into the pockets of a select few while ordinary citizens suffered.

The revelations show that Oparanya’s wife had no official role in government, yet she managed to have county money wired to her M-Pesa and bank accounts under the guise of allowances.

The so-called “Office of the County First Lady” does not legally exist, yet it was used as a channel for fraud. This scheme was so well-planned that even a personal assistant to Oparanya’s wife was deeply involved in generating fake requisitions that were rubber-stamped by top county officials.

These sham transactions expose a well-organized cartel within the county government, where fraud was normalized under Oparanya’s leadership.

This is not the first time Oparanya and his family have been in the spotlight for looting public funds. In 2023, EACC raided his homes in Nairobi and Butere, arresting him and his two wives over allegations of stealing KSh 1.3 billion during his time as governor.

These raids revealed damning evidence, yet Oparanya somehow maneuvered his way into a Cabinet Secretary position under Ruto’s government. Instead of facing justice, he was rewarded with a powerful role, which raises serious questions about how corruption is handled in Kenya.

If someone accused of looting billions is handed a government position, it only proves that corruption pays in this country.

The corruption case involving Oparanya’s wife is a slap in the face to the people of Kakamega, who continue to struggle with poor services in healthcare, roads, and education. While residents lacked basic necessities, millions were being siphoned to fund a luxurious lifestyle for the former governor’s family.

The county health system remains broken, yet money meant for improving services ended up in personal bank accounts. The hypocrisy of Oparanya is sickening he pretended to be a leader for the people while overseeing a looting machine that enriched his household.

Despite a detailed investigation by EACC recommending charges against Oparanya’s wife and senior county officials, there is a high chance that this case will be dragged out or dismissed.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is yet to act on the report, and if history is anything to go by, those involved will try to use political connections to escape justice.

If no action is taken, it will be further proof that corruption cases in Kenya only serve as a distraction while looters continue enjoying their wealth without consequences.

Oparanya and his wife must be held accountable for the blatant theft of public funds. This is not a case of political persecution or witch-hunt it is about the misuse of taxpayer money. If the law is applied equally, Oparanya’s wife should be prosecuted and forced to return the stolen money.

The former governor himself must also be investigated further to uncover the full extent of his looting network. The people of Kakamega deserve justice, not empty promises and political cover-ups.

The era of politicians and their families robbing the country dry without consequences must come to an end.
