In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the healthcare sector, President William Ruto has appointed Justina Wamae, who served as the 2022 presidential running mate to Roots Party Leader George Luchiri Wajackoyah, to a significant state position.

Wamae joins 18 other distinguished members on the newly formed Presidential Taskforce on Human Resource for Health, as detailed in a Gazette notice number 8437 dated July 5, 2024.

She is set to serve a six-month term, which may be extended if necessary.

The establishment of this taskforce marks a pivotal step in addressing the pressing challenges facing Kenya’s healthcare workforce.

President Ruto emphasized the importance of developing comprehensive strategies and policies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery in the country.

“The term of the Presidential Taskforce shall be a period of six (6) months with effect from the date hereof, or for such a period as may be specified by notice in the Kenya Gazette,” the notice reads, underscoring the flexible nature of the taskforce’s tenure.

The Presidential Taskforce on Human Resource for Health is mandated to:

Identify the legal, policy, administrative, and operational constraints impeding the performance of the health sector in Kenya, particularly concerning human resources.

Recommend reforms in the legal, policy, administrative, institutional, and operational frameworks to improve human resources for health.

Review the performance of human resources for health in Kenya and propose enhancements.

Advise on the harmonization of employment terms for healthcare workers, ensuring equitable pay for equal work.

Prioritize the employment of 20,000 healthcare workers, providing legal, policy, administrative, institutional, and operational guidance for this initiative.

The taskforce includes prominent figures such as Patrick Amoth, the Acting Ministry of Health Director General; Dennis Miskellah, Deputy Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU); and other notable healthcare professionals and policy experts.

Wamae’s appointment is seen as a strategic move, bringing fresh perspectives and renewed energy to the taskforce.
