Wavinya Ndeti faces heat over unpaid Machakos county field workers

Agripreneurs working under the Machakos County Department of Agriculture have raised concerns over delayed payments for work they say they completed in July, with some claiming they are still waiting for their dues weeks after finishing their assignments.

The workers say they have not received payments for their July agripreneur duties as well as maize survey work conducted during the same month. According to complaints shared with Nyakundi Report, the affected workers are questioning why they remain unpaid while agripreneurs in other counties have reportedly received payment for similar assignments.

The workers say the delay has caused frustration, especially because they had already spent money on transport and other costs while carrying out their duties. Some assignments required them to travel to different areas, visit farmers and collect information for agricultural programmes.

One of the affected workers appealed for the matter to be addressed, saying Machakos County had allegedly failed to pay agripreneurs for their July work and the maize survey assignments completed in the same period.

The workers have also expressed frustration with the county leadership, claiming that their concerns have not received enough attention. They want the county administration to explain the reason behind the delay and provide a clear date when the outstanding payments will be released.

The issue has raised questions about the payment process within the Machakos County Department of Agriculture. The department may need to clarify whether the payments have been approved, whether funds have been released and if there are any pending administrative processes affecting the workers.

The County Treasury could also clarify whether the necessary payment documents have been submitted and whether any approvals are still pending.

For workers engaged on short-term assignments, delays in payment can create financial difficulties. The affected agripreneurs say they completed the duties assigned to them and therefore expect to receive their payments without further delays.

The matter could also attract the attention of the Machakos County Assembly, particularly its Agriculture Committee, which has an oversight role over the department and county spending on agricultural programmes.

The workers are now calling for clear communication from the county government instead of being left uncertain about when they will receive their money.

Machakos County Department of Agriculture is expected to clarify the status of the July agripreneur payments and maize survey payments, explain what has caused the delay and provide the affected workers with a definite timeline for settlement.
