Cleaning workers employed by Envirocare Cleaning Services, a company contracted to provide cleaning services at Bunge Towers and other government buildings, have raised concerns over delayed salaries and what they describe as intimidation when they try to question their employer about the situation, Nyakundi Report has reported.
According to a worker who contacted Nyakundi Report and requested anonymity, employees had not received their June and July 2026 salaries despite continuing to report to work and perform their duties.
The worker said the delayed payments had left many employees struggling to meet their daily needs.
The worker claimed that previous salary delays had also been experienced.
According to the complaint, April and May salaries were eventually paid at the beginning of June, but employees have since faced another delay without clear communication from the company.
The situation has reportedly created uncertainty among workers who depend on their monthly income to pay rent, buy food, cover transport costs and support their families.
Despite the financial difficulties, the employees say they have continued working at Bunge Towers and other government facilities where Envirocare provides services.
The complaint also raises concerns about how workers are allegedly treated when they attempt to seek help or raise questions about their salaries and working conditions.
According to the worker, employees have been discouraged from approaching Members of Parliament and other government officials at Bunge Towers to explain their situation.
The worker claimed that employees were warned against meeting the officials because they could disclose what they were experiencing at work.
The worker further alleged that raising complaints against the company could result in intimidation.
In the complaint sent to Nyakundi Report, the employee expressed fear of possible victimisation and asked that their identity be protected.
These allegations have not been independently verified, and Envirocare Cleaning Services has not been given an opportunity to respond to the specific claims contained in the complaint.
The concerns nevertheless raise questions about the welfare of workers employed by private contractors operating inside public institutions.
While government agencies may contract private companies to provide cleaning, security and other services, the employees performing those duties remain dependent on their employers for timely payment and proper working conditions.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, through the relevant labour officers, could investigate the complaints and establish whether the workers have been paid according to their employment agreements and the requirements of Kenyan labour law.
If the salaries are found to be outstanding, the relevant authorities can determine the amount owed and take appropriate steps to ensure the workers receive what they are entitled to.
The administration responsible for Bunge Towers could also establish whether contractors operating within the facility are meeting their obligations to employees.
Public institutions have a responsibility to ensure that services provided on their premises do not come at the expense of workers’ basic rights.
The complaint is also part of a wider concern raised by contracted workers in different parts of the country. Workers employed by private companies serving public institutions have previously raised complaints involving delayed salaries, unpaid overtime, statutory deductions and fear of victimisation after questioning their employers.
Such cases point to the need for stronger monitoring of contractors, particularly when they operate in government facilities.
Workers should have a safe way of reporting concerns without fear of losing their jobs or facing intimidation.
For the cleaning staff at Bunge Towers, the immediate concern remains the alleged delay in salaries. They say they have continued doing their work while waiting for payments they depend on to meet basic needs.
The matter now requires proper investigation by the relevant authorities and a response from Envirocare Cleaning Services so that the allegations can be established and, where necessary, addressed.
