Gloria Orwoba’s Senate seat declared vacant after failed appeal against UDA expulsion

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially declared the seat of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba vacant. This major announcement follows her failure to stop her expulsion from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Orwoba, who joined the Senate in 2022 as a nominated senator under UDA, had been involved in continuous disagreements with the party leadership. Over time, her outspoken opinions and public statements put her at odds with party officials, eventually leading to disciplinary action and her removal from the party list.

She tried to challenge this decision using legal and political means, but she was unsuccessful.Speaker Kingi made it clear during a Senate sitting that Orwoba’s time as a senator had officially ended.

He told the House that the position she held was now vacant since her appeal against the party’s decision had not worked. His statement marks the end of Orwoba’s short but controversial stay in the Senate, where she was known for being vocal about gender equality and government accountability.

Her style often caused tension within the UDA party, which was struggling with growing signs of internal division. The declaration now allows the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to begin the process of selecting a new nominated senator to replace Orwoba.

This change could also be an opportunity for UDA to reorganize itself, especially at a time when the party is facing criticism from some of its own members. Analysts believe that removing Orwoba may send a message to other members who have been openly questioning the party’s direction. Some say this could either strengthen the party by creating unity or make things worse if more members feel silenced.

Even though she has not yet given a formal response to the decision, people close to Orwoba say she might not give up just yet. There are suggestions that she could continue to fight her expulsion through the courts or other legal options.
