At least six people are feared dead and eight others injured after a 14-seater matatu collided with a parked lorry at Twin Bridge in Mau Summit early Saturday morning.
The crash occurred at around 3am along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, leaving the matatu badly damaged. The injured passengers were rushed to Londiani Hospital, where they were receiving medical attention.
Images from the scene showed the extent of the damage, with the matatu’s windscreen shattered, windows broken and several seats badly mangled following the impact.
Preliminary reports indicate that some of the passengers were travelling back home after attending a police graduation ceremony before the accident.
It remains unclear what caused the matatu to crash into the parked lorry.Police have launched investigations as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officers are expected to examine the condition of the vehicles, the road and other factors that may have contributed to the crash.
The accident adds to a growing list of serious road crashes reported across the country in recent days, raising renewed concerns about road safety.
On Friday, September 4, five people died and 21 others were injured after a lorry overturned along the Ikutha-Mutulu-Kasaala Road in Kitui County.
The accident happened at Kasarani, past Mutulu Shopping Centre, when the lorry, which was carrying traders heading to Kasaala Market, reportedly lost control and overturned.
Ikutha Sub-County Police Commander Raphael Mutiso confirmed that five people died at the scene. The victims were identified as one man and four women, with their bodies taken to the mortuary at Mutomo Level 4 Sub-County Hospital.
The latest incidents come as authorities face continued pressure to address road crashes.
The government has been considering tougher measures aimed at improving road safety and reducing the number of deaths on the country’s roads.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority shows that 2,150 people died in road crashes during the first six months of 2026.
This represented an 11 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025.
Pedestrians remained the most affected group, followed by motorcyclists, while passengers ranked third among road crash victims.
