Apostle Francis Musili has drawn attention after asking members of his congregation to exchange KSh1,000 for a single US dollar, which he described as a spiritual point of contact.
During a service at ATG Deliverance Ministry, Musili held dollar notes and told the congregation that he would not give them away for free. He said the prevailing exchange rate was slightly above KSh100 to the dollar, but asked members to pay KSh1,000 instead.
His instruction was that those who received the dollar should not spend it but keep it in their wallets.
Musili then made a promise that has since attracted criticism online. He told the congregation that even if someone’s house had been locked because of rent arrears, they should keep the dollar because it would “call white people.”
He also prayed that those who took the dollar would become connected to new opportunities.
The appeal appears to have been presented as a prophetic act rather than an ordinary currency exchange. Members were encouraged to come forward with their KSh1,000 notes, with the dollar presented as a symbol of expected financial opportunities and connections.
Video of the service has since circulated online, prompting mixed reactions. Some viewers questioned why members facing financial difficulties would be asked to pay far above the dollar’s market value. Others criticised the idea of attaching a financial price to a spiritual promise.
The incident has also revived a wider debate in Kenya about prosperity preaching and the use of money, foreign currency and symbolic objects during church services.
Critics argue that such practices can place additional pressure on people who are already struggling financially.
