A police operation in Yatta Sub-County has led to the arrest of three suspects believed to be behind an M-Pesa shop robbery in Katangi, where an attendant was robbed of Sh169,000.
The robbery happened on May 15, 2026, leaving police investigating the incident and trying to establish the whereabouts of those involved.
The breakthrough came after members of the public provided information that helped officers trace the suspects.Police officers based at Katangi acted on the tip-off and moved to Katangi Shopping Centre, where they arrested one of the suspects identified as Ben Mutuku.
The arrest reportedly helped officers expand the search to other areas believed to be connected to the robbery.
The operation was later extended to Yathui in Mwala Sub-County, where two other suspects were located.Simon Makau and Samuel Mbolu were arrested while travelling in a white Toyota Corolla bearing registration number KDU 164G.
The vehicle was impounded by police and is being treated as part of the evidence as investigators work to establish its connection to the robbery.
During the operation, officers also recovered an M-Pesa till phone that had reportedly been stolen from the shop during the incident.
The phone was presented to the M-Pesa attendant, who positively identified it as the device taken during the robbery.
The recovery of the phone is expected to form part of the evidence that investigators will rely on as they piece together what happened on the day of the robbery.
The three suspects are currently in police custody as officers complete the necessary procedures before they are taken to court.
Police are also holding the recovered phone and the vehicle as exhibits while investigations continue.
The arrests come after growing reliance on information from members of the public to help police trace suspects involved in criminal activities.
In this case, the tip-off provided officers with a lead that allowed them to move from Katangi to Yathui and arrest the remaining suspects.
Investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding the robbery, including the movement of the suspects and the vehicle. The suspects will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations against them when they are arraigned in court.
The case remains under investigation, and the recovered items will form part of the evidence presented as police pursue the matter.
