Two men have been arrested in connection with a robbery with violence and an alleged gang rape that happened after a road traffic accident in Kikuyu.
Detectives say the suspects are believed to have taken advantage of a couple who had just been involved in the accident before attacking and robbing them.
According to investigators, the incident happened near Kikuyu Boys High School after the victims were involved in a road accident.
As they struggled to deal with the situation, two men approached them pretending to be Good Samaritans who wanted to help.
Police say the suspects instead turned against the couple and robbed them of their valuables. They allegedly forced the victims to reveal their M-Pesa PIN numbers before transferring money from their mobile accounts.
The female victim was also allegedly gang raped during the attack.
The matter was reported to the police, prompting detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to launch investigations immediately. Officers from the DCI Headquarters Operations Action Team, the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and detectives based in Kikuyu worked together to trace those believed to be behind the incident.
Investigators say they relied on forensic analysis, intelligence gathering and other investigative methods to identify the suspects. Their efforts eventually led them to Kamangu in Kikuyu, where two suspects identified as Kevin Ndereba Kilonzo and Shaban Warui Zainab were arrested.
During the operation, detectives recovered mobile phones that they believe were used to carry out the fraudulent M-Pesa transactions. They also recovered two pangas that police suspect may have been used during the commission of the crimes.
Police say investigations are still ongoing and have now expanded beyond the two suspects already in custody.
Detectives are pursuing another person believed to have received the stolen mobile phones.
They are also examining whether the suspects could be linked to other robbery with violence and sexual offence cases reported in Kikuyu Sub-County and nearby areas.
The two suspects are currently being held at Kikuyu Police Station. They are expected to undergo an identification parade before investigators complete the processing of the case ahead of their arraignment in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations thanked members of the public who shared information that helped investigators make the arrests.
The agency said public cooperation remains important in fighting crime and assured residents that detectives will continue pursuing violent criminal gangs operating in different parts of the country.
The DCI also reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out thorough investigations and ensuring that those found responsible for serious crimes are taken through the legal process.
