NEWS IN: Police Surround Jimi Wanjigi’s Residence As Businessman Alleges Harassment Amidst Nane Nane Protests

On August 8, 2024, police officers surrounded the Muthaiga residence of businessman and politician Jimi Wanjigi in Nairobi.

The operation began in the afternoon, with a significant number of officers arriving in two vehicles, including a lorry and a land cruiser.

Wanjigi shared the situation on social media, expressing concern for his safety and alleging that the police wanted to arrest or harm him.

According to reports, the police justified their presence by claiming that Wanjigi had been seen along Limuru Road distributing money to a group of people, which led them to attempt to apprehend him.

However, Wanjigi denied these allegations, questioning the legality of his actions and labeling the police operation as harassment.

He remained defiant, asserting that he had done nothing wrong and that the ongoing anti-government protests were legitimate and organic.

This event is not the first time Wanjigi’s home has been the focus of police activity.

In 2017, his residence was similarly besieged by the police in a standoff that lasted for hours.

The latest incident occurred during a day of heightened tension, coinciding with the Nane Nane protests, which saw widespread demonstrations and confrontations with the police across Nairobi.

Wanjigi’s vocal criticism of the government and his involvement in opposition activities have made him a frequent target of law enforcement, leading to speculation that these actions may be politically motivated.

More officers were dispatched to his home, but Wanjigi continued to resist, calling out what he perceived as intimidation tactics.

The incident has drawn significant public attention, raising questions about the state of political freedoms and the use of police force in Kenya.
