Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has openly expressed her disappointment following the decision of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president, Faith Odhiambo, to reject an appointment by President William Ruto.
Odhiambo was selected to be part of a prestigious task force mandated to audit the national debt and provide a comprehensive report to the president.
The LSK, however, has deemed the appointment unconstitutional, leading to Odhiambo’s refusal to participate in the task force.
This decision has sparked a wave of reactions, with Nyamu being one of the first high-profile figures to voice her concerns.
In a heartfelt social media post, Nyamu questioned the reasoning behind Odhiambo’s decision.
She emphasized the importance of having the interests of Kenyans represented by a respected and capable leader within such a critical task force.
“I’m not sure of the rationale for LSK president Faith Odhiambo to decline the President’s appointment to the task force that will conduct a forensic audit of public debt.
She has turned down an opportunity to have Kenyans’ interests represented by the premier bar association in line with one of its objectives to protect and assist the public in Kenya in all matters touching, ancillary or incidental to the law,” Nyamu expressed.
Nyamu highlighted the significant challenges posed by public debt, noting that it remains one of the most pressing issues facing the country.
She expressed her dismay at Odhiambo’s decision, suggesting that her participation would have been a crucial step towards addressing the debt crisis.
“Public debt is a momentous challenge we face as a country, and I’m somewhat disappointed that she wasn’t eager to be part of the first step to figuring it out,” Nyamu continued.
The task force’s role in auditing the national debt is seen as a critical measure in ensuring financial transparency and accountability within the government.
With Odhiambo’s rejection, there are growing concerns about the implications for the task force’s effectiveness and the broader efforts to manage Kenya’s public finances.
This incident has also brought to light the ongoing tensions between different branches of governance and legal bodies in Kenya.
As the debate continues, many will be watching closely to see how this decision impacts the task force’s work and the broader efforts to address the nation’s debt issues.
Nyamu’s public disappointment underscores the complexities and challenges involved in governance and the pursuit of national interest, highlighting the need for collaboration and unity among Kenya’s leaders.
