A Somali national has been fined Sh370,000 by the JKIA Law Courts after admitting to unlawfully being in Kenya and fraudulently obtaining Kenyan identity and passport documents.
Mohamud Mohammed Roble was arrested after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through the Immigration and Citizen Services Investigations unit, took over his case from immigration officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).Investigations established that Roble had obtained Kenyan registration documents before securing a Kenyan passport through false declarations.
The findings led to his prosecution on three counts relating to his unlawful presence in the country and the use of fraudulent identity documents.
Roble pleaded guilty to all three charges when he appeared before the court.
The court fined him Sh150,000 for unlawfully being present in Kenya and another Sh150,000 for making a false declaration to obtain a Kenyan passport.
He was also fined Sh70,000 for knowingly presenting an identity card containing false entries with the intention of deceiving authorities.
The total fines amounted to Sh370,000. The court ordered that he serve prison terms if he fails to pay the respective fines.
The court further directed that Roble be repatriated to Somalia after paying the fines.
His Kenyan passport, which was fraudulently obtained, was also ordered to be surrendered to the Director General of Immigration Services for destruction.
The case highlights the measures being taken by investigative agencies to address the fraudulent acquisition of Kenyan identity and travel documents.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the country’s identification and travel documents.
The agency also continues to work with relevant government departments to detect and prosecute individuals who attempt to obtain official documents through fraudulent means.
