A section of the well-known Muthaiga Golf Course in Nairobi has been closed to members while the club works to settle a long-standing boundary disagreement with the Kenya Forest Service.
The affected part of the course includes the Front Nine, covering holes numbered 2 through 9.
These areas are now off-limits until further notice.
According to the club’s chairperson, Dennis Mwirigi, officers from the Kenya Forest Service have taken control of the disputed land.
They argue that this portion of the golf course actually falls inside the boundaries of Karura Forest, which is protected public land. The disagreement has gone on for some time, but it recently intensified when forest service staff moved onto the site and stopped golfers from using those holes.
In a letter to members, Mwirigi explained that the board is treating the matter with urgency. They are engaging government land surveyors and legal teams in an effort to reach a solution as quickly as possible.
For now, only the closed section is unavailable. The driving range and parking areas remain open for normal use.
The club has described the forest service’s action as an unauthorised takeover of private property. On the other side, the Kenya Forest Service maintains that the land in question belongs to the gazetted forest and should not form part of the golf course.
This difference of opinion has created practical problems for members who can no longer play a full round on the familiar layout.
Muthaiga Golf Club is one of Nairobi’s established sporting venues, and the temporary loss of half the course has disrupted regular play and events.
Officials say they are committed to resolving the issue through proper channels rather than prolonged conflict.
Discussions involving technical experts and legal representatives are already under way.
Until a clear decision is reached, members will have to adjust their games to the remaining open sections of the course.
The club has assured players that it is doing everything possible to restore full access soon. The outcome will depend on the findings of the surveyors and the results of the ongoing talks between the two parties.
