Six suspects arrested as police intercept massive drug consignment

A major drug trafficking attempt was stopped in Mombasa after Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives carried out a carefully planned operation that ended with the arrest of six suspects and the seizure of bhang worth about Sh72 million.

Officers had received intelligence that a large consignment was on the move, and they moved quickly to block it before it reached the streets.

The detectives intercepted a truck with registration number KDT 659G along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. Inside the truck, they found 50 large sacks filled with long rolls of bhang wrapped in khaki paper.

The haul weighed about 2,400 kilograms, making it one of the biggest recent seizures in the region.

The truck driver, Nolden Ogola Misieba, and his co-driver, Andrew Kaida, were immediately arrested. The operation did not end there.

As the detectives continued their pursuit, they intercepted three more vehicles believed to be part of the wider distribution network.

A Toyota Noah, registration KCL 458S, was blocked and its driver, Jefferson Kamau, and his accomplice, Lawrence Onyango, were taken into custody.

A Nissan Note, KCZ 567R, driven by John Lutomia, and a Toyota Vitz, KDQ 867K, driven by Samuel Juma Okoth, were also stopped and seized.

Investigations have shown that the three smaller vehicles were meant to pick up the bhang from the truck and distribute it across Mombasa and nearby areas. Detectives say the operation successfully disrupted a major supply chain that would have fed the illegal drug market.

All six suspects are being processed in custody, while the seized bhang and vehicles have been secured as exhibits.

The DCI has praised members of the public for providing vital information, saying that cooperation between citizens and law enforcement continues to play a key role in keeping communities safe.
