A Panda Mart employee has raised concerns over what they describe as a lack of support for workers who suffer injuries while on duty, calling on management and labour authorities to address workplace welfare issues.
In a statement shared anonymously, the employee claimed they sustained two separate injuries while carrying out their duties at the company but were forced to pay for medical treatment from their own pocket despite the incidents occurring at work.
According to the worker, the first injury happened about two months ago. They said they expected the company to provide assistance or help cover treatment costs because the injury was work-related.
However, they claim no immediate support was provided, leaving them to finance their own medical care.
The employee stated that they hoped the matter would eventually be addressed, but nothing changed. The worker further alleged that they suffered another injury this month while on duty.
Since then, they say they have repeatedly sought information regarding medical support, compensation, or assistance from the company but have not received a clear response.
โEvery time I ask, I am simply told to โwait.โ Weeks pass, the issue is forgotten, and no action is taken,โ the employee said.
They questioned why workers should be expected to cover medical expenses arising from injuries sustained while performing their duties, arguing that employers have a responsibility to protect and support employees in such situations.
Beyond concerns about workplace injuries, the employee also highlighted challenges related to wages and the rising cost of living.
The worker said they currently earn KSh 16,000 per month, an amount they believe is becoming increasingly difficult to live on in Nairobi, where expenses such as rent, transport, food, and other necessities continue to rise.
According to the employee, many workers feel their concerns about salaries and welfare are not receiving sufficient attention despite their efforts to help the business operate successfully.
โWe are not asking for luxury. We are asking for fair treatment when we are injured at work. We are asking for proper medical support. We are asking for timely responses when legitimate concerns are raised,โ the employee stated.
The worker urged Panda Mart management, labour authorities, and workplace safety regulators to look into the concerns and ensure employees receive the protection and support they deserve.
