Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Garissa have arrested 26-year-old Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh, who is being held as the main suspect in the fatal robbery and stabbing of US national Osman Aweys Abdi.
Muhiyadin was arrested in Kabete, Nairobi, after detectives traced him to a hideout following several months of investigations into Osmanโs death.
He is currently being held at Kasarani Police Station pending his escort to Garissa, where he is expected to face murder charges.
The incident happened on May 28, 2026, near Abubeida School in Bulla Mzuri, about five kilometres north of Iftin Police Station in Garissa.
Osman was attacked during the incident and sustained a stab wound to his left thigh. He was also struck with a blunt object on the left side of his head.His mobile phone was stolen during the attack, adding a robbery aspect to the incident that later became the subject of investigations by DCI detectives.
Osmanโs brother was informed about the attack by a well-wisher who had obtained his contact from the victim. He immediately rushed to the scene, where he found Osman in pain following the assault.
The brother then took Osman to Antalya Hospital for medical attention. However, the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility.
His body was later transferred to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where it was preserved pending a postmortem examination.
DCI detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and the events that led to Osmanโs death.
The investigation continued after the suspect went into hiding. Detectives pursued various leads as they worked to establish his whereabouts and track him down.
After months of follow-up, the detectives eventually located Muhiyadin at a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi. He was arrested and taken into custody before being placed at Kasarani Police Station as arrangements were made for his transfer to Garissa.
The arrest marks a development in the investigation into the death of Osman, with detectives expected to continue pursuing the case as the suspect is taken through the legal process.
The DCI said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation aimed at locating the suspect after he went into hiding.
The agency also maintained that investigations would continue until those connected to the incident are brought before the law.
Muhiyadin is expected to be escorted to Garissa, where he will face murder charges in connection with Osmanโs death.
The charges will give him an opportunity to respond to the allegations against him before a court.
The case began with the attack on May 28 and the subsequent death of Osman after he was rushed to hospital. Months later, detectives were able to trace the suspect to Nairobi, leading to his arrest and setting the stage for the next phase of the legal process.
