Hannah Mwaura charged with forging MKU degree to pocket Sh 28.4M in auditor office salaries

A former Deputy Director at the office of the Auditor General has been charged with forging a degree certificate from Mount Kenya University and using it to secure employment gaining Sh 28.4 million in salary over 11 years.

Hannah Wambui Mwaura alias Anna Wambui Mwaura is accused of forging a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option), second class honours โ€“ upper division from Mt Kenya University in the name of Anna Wambui Mwaura alleging it to be a genuine certificate issued by the said university.

Mwaura is alleged to have committed the offense on unknown date and place within the Republic of Kenya.

The accused person is also charged with fraudulent acquisition of public property, to wit, 28,468,754.14 being monthly salary paid to her after securing employment using a forged degree certificate purported to have been awarded to her from Mt Kenya University on 20th August 2010 which the said office relied on to employ her.

It is alleged that she committed this offense between 3rd February 2013 and 23rd May 2024 in Nairobi.

Mwaura is further facing the offense of deceiving principal by providing false Information to Office of the Auditor General by filing in the application for employment form stating that she is a holder of BCM Commerce-Accounting Option degree from Mt Kenya University pursued between 2008 to 2010, a fact she knew or ought to have known to be false.

She is alleged to have committed the offense on 3rd February 2014, being a public officer employed by a public body.Other charges include uttering a forged degree and providing false information to a public entity.

She denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa and was granted a bond of Sh 1 million with an alternative cash bail of Sh 450,000.

In addition, Mwaura was ordered her to deposit her passport with the court and not to interfere with the state witnesses.

The will be mentioned on 19th August 2026 for pre-trial.
