A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Busia after police officers recovered suspected narcotic drugs during an operation targeting illegal drug activities in the town’s Central Business District.
According to investigators, the arrest followed intelligence received by law enforcement officers, prompting them to launch a swift operation at Busia’s main bus stage.
Officers identified and intercepted the suspect before carrying out a search of his belongings.
During the search, police reportedly found three packages wrapped in yellow cello tape inside the suspect’s backpack.
The packages are believed to contain cannabis sativa, although they will be handled as part of ongoing investigations and legal procedures.
In addition to the suspected cannabis, officers recovered 26 sachets filled with an unidentified powdery substance.
The material has since been forwarded for forensic examination to establish its exact composition and determine whether it contains illegal drugs or other controlled substances.
The suspect, identified as Ouma Dibogo Obobo, is said to be a resident of Migori County. He was taken into custody and escorted to Busia Police Station together with the items recovered during the operation.
Detectives are continuing with investigations as they seek to establish the origin of the substances and whether other individuals may have been involved.
The arrest is part of broader efforts by authorities to curb the circulation of illegal drugs and disrupt networks involved in narcotics trafficking. Police have continued to encourage members of the public to share information that could help in identifying and apprehending suspects linked to the illegal drug trade.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting narcotics-related crimes across the country.
The agency says it remains focused on dismantling drug trafficking networks, intercepting illegal substances at key entry points, and ensuring that those involved are brought before the courts.
Authorities have also noted that public cooperation plays an important role in combating drug-related offences, with tip-offs from residents often helping investigators respond quickly to suspected criminal activities.
The case involving the Busia arrest is expected to proceed as forensic tests and further investigations provide more details.
