Kenya Deploys Police Officers To A Second Country After Haiti For Peacekeeping Mission

Kenya sent a contingent of police officers to South Sudan for a peacekeeping mission, the second international mission undertaken by Kenyan officers this year.

The officers will coordinate with other South Sudanese officers assigned to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission (UNMISS).

The 18 Kenyan officers are primarily drawn from the Administration Police Service (APS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Mbatian Kantai, a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), will command the officers in the foreign country for a one-year period.

The officers met with the Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja at the National Police Service headquarters, Vigilance House in Nairobi on September 26 before embarking on the peacekeeping mission.

The IG requested that officers incorporate teamwork and demonstrate high levels of professionalism in the performance of their duties in East Africa’s youngest nation.

Kanja also wished the officers well and reminded them to maintain a high level of discipline throughout the mission.

“IG Kanja reminded the officers to work as a team and exhibit high levels of discipline and professionalism in the performance of their duty and further wished them a successful tour of duty,” a statement from NPS read.

This will be Kenya’s second peacekeeping mission served by National Police Service officers this year, with another contingent currently deployed in Haiti.

Kenya’s mission in Haiti consists of 400 officers who have received advanced security operations training and are led by Senior Assistant Inspector General (SAIG) of Police Charles Otunge.

The officers in Haiti are currently serving under the Multinational Security Support Mission’s (MSS) mandate, as assigned by the United Nations Security Council.
