Kenya Power on Tuesday refuted claims of involvement in the fire at Hillside Endarasha, Nyeri County, which destroyed a dormitory and resulted in the deaths of 21 students.
In their statement, the utility company clarified that there was no connection between the fire’s cause and their power supply network, despite speculation circulating on social media.
Kenya Power emphasized that the fire did not impact two prepaid meters within the school’s premises or the neighboring customers served by the same transformer.
The company confirmed that all its installations, including the meter, supply cable, earthing, fuses, and transformer, remained intact.
Kenya Power also noted that the electricity supplied to the school came from a low-voltage line from the Mweiga sub-station, and the supply was stable when the fire broke out.
The company felt the need to address the situation after some online users suggested a possible electrical fault as the fire’s cause.
Kenya Power reported that they promptly cut off the power supply to the school upon learning of the fire, underscoring their commitment to electrical safety.
The company expressed sympathy for the affected families and wished for a swift recovery for the injured students.
This clarification from Kenya Power came shortly after the government announced ongoing investigations into the fire’s origin, with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) leading the inquiry.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura revealed that all 330 boarders at the school had been accounted for and that autopsies and DNA tests were being conducted to identify the victims.
