Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya Aburi is facing intense public backlash after protests erupted over reports of embezzlement involving the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).
The protests, which took place on Tuesday afternoon, were fueled by accusations that Donya misappropriated funds meant for community empowerment programs, including those targeting women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
Reports indicate that a staggering Kshs 19.7 million, originally earmarked for these initiatives, was diverted to ghost groups, leaving no legitimate beneficiaries who could confirm receiving the funds.
Instead, the money allegedly went into purchasing high-end vehicles and financing mansions, sparking outrage among Kisii residents.
The protests, which escalated quickly, saw angry demonstrators storming Donya’s Kisii offices.
Frustrated by the reports of corruption, the protesters tore down parts of the office’s fence and shattered windows in a desperate attempt to force their way inside.
As the situation grew more intense, questions began to surface about Donya’s response to the growing unrest.
In what appears to be a calculated move to safeguard herself and her properties, Donya has reportedly deployed a big number of police officers to guard her various properties.
Among the most controversial of these properties is a mansion located in Riana Ward, which many believe was built with proceeds from the alleged corruption.
However, what has raised eyebrows even further is the fact that the police officers guarding Donya’s properties were not sourced from Kisii County, where the properties are located.
Instead, reports indicate that officers were brought in from Rongo in Migori County, about 100 kilometers away from Kisii.
This unusual deployment has sparked further suspicion and concern, particularly given the timing and the nature of the ongoing protests.
Sources claim that the police were brought in under the direction of the Kisii County Commissioner and County Police Commander, with their primary mission being to suppress any further public dissent and intimidate those questioning Donya’s conduct.
The deployment of officers from outside the county raises critical questions.
Why were police officers mobilized from such a distant location, bypassing their local duties and jurisdictions? Shouldn’t their resources have been focused on addressing security concerns in their immediate areas, rather than being sent to Kisii to act as a shield for Donya’s controversial properties?
The involvement of police in this context has sparked widespread concern, with many seeing it as an effort to silence the growing public outcry over corruption.
The use of law enforcement to protect individuals accused of embezzlement only fuels suspicions that those in power are willing to go to extreme lengths to cover up their wrongdoings.
The mobilization of officers from outside Kisii County, far removed from their regular duties, suggests an attempt to suppress not just public protests but also any attempts to investigate the alleged corruption further.
For many residents, the deployment of outside police officers is a clear indication that Donya is not only trying to protect her ill-gotten wealth but also attempting to maintain her position of power, despite mounting evidence against her.
The protests have left the public wondering whether the justice system is truly independent or if it is being manipulated to serve the interests of those who wield political power.
It remains to be seen whether Donya will be held accountable for her alleged actions.
The involvement of law enforcement in her defense raises broader questions about the role of police in safeguarding the interests of the powerful, rather than serving the public.
The growing dissatisfaction among Kisii residents is a stark reminder that citizens are increasingly unwilling to tolerate corruption and the misuse of public resources, especially when it involves critical funds meant to uplift marginalized groups.
