The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has claimed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was in contact with two people linked to the murder of mental health doctor Victoria Mutiso, including one of the main suspects in the case.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, August 7, DCI Director Mohamed Amin said investigators had established communication between Gachagua and one of the suspects as detectives continued to piece together the events surrounding the killing.
“Unfortunately, what clearly came out of this is that Honourable Rigathi Gachagua was in communication with one of the main suspects who was feeding him with this information,” Amin said.
The DCI director also alleged that investigations showed Gachagua had communicated with the boda boda rider believed to have transported the suspects involved in the attack.
“We were able to establish that apparently he also appears to have been in communication with the boda boda rider,” the DCI Director disclosed.
Amin questioned why the former deputy president had not shared the information with investigators if his intention was to support the investigation.
“If really Rigathi Gachagua meant well for these investigations, because we are not trying to deal with politics, then he should have shared the information with investigators,” Amin added.
The claims were made as the DCI gave an update on the investigation into the fatal shooting of Dr Mutiso. According to Amin, detectives have made major progress using forensic analysis and intelligence-led investigations.
He said investigators have identified the suspected organiser of the murder, the motorcycle rider who allegedly ferried the gunman, and several other people believed to have participated in planning and carrying out the attack.
The DCI further alleged that rogue police officers were involved in the murder. Investigators claim some officers helped coordinate the operation while another is suspected of supplying the firearm used during the shooting.
A police constable attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station has since been arrested after detectives identified him as the officer alleged to have fired the fatal shots.
Amin also revealed that Dr Mutiso had escaped an earlier attempt on her life on July 7. He said two men riding a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her along Ngong Road near Junction Mall, but she managed to escape unharmed.
Investigators are still following additional leads and are also examining whether some of the suspects may have links to another high-profile shooting that happened in 2025.
Dr Victoria Mutiso was shot dead on the morning of Wednesday, July 29, at around 9am near the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. The investigation into her killing remains ongoing, with the DCI saying more arrests could follow as detectives continue gathering evidence.
