Residents of Migori are still coming to terms with the shocking death of a Kenya Defence Forces officer whose life was cut short inside her own home.
The incident, which happened during the early hours of Christmas Day, has raised many questions as police continue with investigations to establish what truly happened and who was responsible.
The officer, identified as Second Lieutenant Cynthia Awour Mboya, was found dead inside her matrimonial house.
She was 28 years old and was serving at the Gilgil Barracks at the time of her death. According to police, she had been on leave and was spending time at home when the incident occurred.
Her body was discovered lying on the floor beside her bed in a pool of blood, raising immediate concern among officers who arrived at the scene.
Initial observations by the police showed that she had deep cut wounds and visible signs of strangulation around her neck. These injuries suggested that she may have struggled with her attacker before dying. Investigators said she was alone in the house at the time her body was found, adding to the mystery surrounding the killing.
Police arrested three suspects for questioning. Among those detained is the husband of the deceased, who is also a civilian. The woman’s mother-in-law and her brother-in-law were also taken into custody as detectives worked to piece together what happened.
Police later revisited the scene on Christmas Day and recovered items they described as key exhibits in the case. These included a black sweat pant, a grey sweater, grey sports shoes and a navy blue cap, which are suspected to have been worn by the husband on the night of the incident.
Officers also searched a shop owned by the husband at Cool Plaza, where they recovered a panga with red stains believed to be blood. These findings have become part of the ongoing investigation as detectives follow different leads to establish the motive behind the killing.
According to a statement given to police, the husband said he arrived home from Migori town at around 1:00 a.m. He claimed that he found the doors to the house wide open and later discovered his wife lying motionless on the bedroom floor.
Police also reported that two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a Samsung and a Tecno Camon 12 Pro, were missing from the house.
The body of the officer was later moved to Migori County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted to give more details about the cause of death. Colleagues of the deceased described her as a hardworking and dedicated officer who had big dreams and always carried out her duties with commitment.
Police have said investigations are ongoing and more arrests may be made as they follow new leads. They also noted that cases of murder have been rising in recent days, with many linked to love triangles, land disputes, and money issues.
While some cases have been taken to court, others remain unresolved, leaving families seeking justice and answers.
