The death of a young Kenya Defence Forces officer at Gilgil Barracks has raised many questions as investigators piece together what happened on the night she died.
According to a report published by the Daily Nation on Friday, December 26, 2025, police are relying heavily on the account given by the husband of the late Cynthia Awuor, as well as evidence collected from the coupleโs home and business.
Police say Cynthiaโs husband told them that on the night of the incident, he arrived home at around 1:00 AM after closing his shop in Migori town.
He explained that as soon as he reached the house, he noticed something unusual. The doors were fully open, which immediately caused him fear and confusion. He claimed that this was not normal and that he became uneasy before even stepping inside.
In his statement to the police, the husband said he entered the house and walked straight to the bedroom. It was there, according to him, that he found Cynthia lying lifeless. Shocked by what he saw, he said he raised an alarm and contacted the authorities to report what had happened.
This phone call became one of the first official records made after Cynthiaโs death.

Officers from the area moved quickly to the scene after receiving the report. Upon arrival, detectives secured the house and began their investigations. Cynthiaโs body was later collected from the home and taken to the mortuary as police prepared for a post-mortem examination to help establish the exact cause of death.
While examining the house, officers reported finding several items that they considered important to the investigation. These included sports shoes, a pair of sweatpants, a navy blue hat, and a grey sweater.
According to police, these were clothes allegedly worn by Cynthiaโs husband on the night she died. Investigators believe these items could help them understand movements and actions before and after the incident.
Police say they made a major breakthrough. During further searches, officers discovered a sharp panga with what they described as red stains.
The weapon was allegedly hidden inside the shop owned by Cynthiaโs husband. This discovery raised more suspicion and deepened the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 28-year-old officer.
Police now believe that the case may not be as straightforward as initially reported. They are working to establish whether the death was a result of an attack within the home and whether there was an attempt to mislead investigators by making it appear as though another person was responsible.
At this stage, detectives say their focus is on gathering all available evidence, including forensic analysis of the items recovered and statements from people who may have interacted with the couple before the incident.
Authorities have emphasized that all findings will be guided by evidence and due process, as the family and the public await clear answers on what led to Cynthia Awuorโs tragic death.
