DCI rules out foul play in death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo after highway crash

Fresh details have now emerged regarding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, with investigators concluding that the incident was the result of a road accident and not a criminal act.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has clarified that there is no evidence pointing to foul play following extensive inquiries into the tragic event.

According to the investigators, Jirongo lost his life on the night of December 13, 2025, after being involved in a road accident at the Karai area along the busy Nakuruโ€“Nairobi Highway.

His death triggered widespread public discussion and concern, especially after members of his family raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident. These concerns prompted authorities to open a detailed investigation to establish what exactly happened on that night.

A multi-agency team was formed to handle the probe. It included homicide detectives and specialists from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.

The team visited the scene of the accident, where they carefully processed the area, collected key exhibits, and documented physical evidence.

Investigators also secured CCTV footage from a petrol station located near the scene to help reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. In addition to the CCTV footage, detectives obtained the bus manifest and several amateur videos taken by people who were present at the scene.

All the collected materials were subjected to forensic analysis to ensure accuracy and reliability.

The aim was to rule out any possibility of tampering or deliberate wrongdoing. As part of the investigation, statements were recorded from several individuals considered crucial to the case.

These included Jirongoโ€™s wife and the first family member who was informed immediately after the accident. Police also took statements from the driver and conductor of the bus involved, employees of the petrol station near the crash site, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangโ€™ula.

Seven passengers who were traveling on the bus also volunteered to give their accounts to assist detectives.

Investigators further recorded a statement from the driver of a bus that was said to have helped during the rescue efforts after the crash.

After reviewing all the evidence gathered so far, the DCI stated that the findings point to a road traffic accident, with no signs of foul play.

The detectives noted that the investigation is still ongoing and that once all remaining procedures are completed, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further guidance.

Despite ruling out foul play, the DCI indicated that the driver of the bus involved may still face possible criminal charges, depending on the final outcome of the investigations and the evidence available.

Authorities also cautioned members of the public against spreading speculation or unverified claims about the incident.

They warned that such statements could interfere with investigations and cause unnecessary anxiety.

This update comes just weeks after a post-mortem examination revealed that Jirongo died from severe blunt-force injuries consistent with a high-impact road collision, findings that align with the conclusions reached by investigators.
