Panic buying hits Dar es Salaam and Mbeya ahead of Tuesday demonstrations

Serious crowding has been reported in supermarkets around Tanzania, as citizens brace for tomorrow’s planned protests.

Groups of young people have been calling for nationwide demos on Tuesday, similar to those witnessed on October 29.

In fear of the protests actually happening and basic commodities being unavailable, Tanzanians are crowding supermarkets and markets to acquire basic needs early to avoid having to leave their homes tomorrow.

Some have expressed their fear that most stores might not open on Tuesday, which might subject them to inconveniences.

“I don’t know what the situation will be like, so I found it wise to buy my necessities in advance so that I don’t have to leave the house to avoid inconvenience in case of protests,” Inviolatha, a resident of Kijichi in Dar es Salaam, told BBC.

Similar scenes have been witnessed in Mbeya, another area heavily affected by the October protests, as citizens also complain of a sudden shoot of commodity prices.

“Here in Mbeya we experienced the effects of the October 29 incident. I don’t want to be without basic goods,” said Tatu Kajembe, a resident of Mbeya.

The calls for demonstrations have persisted despite warnings from the Tanzanian Police Force, which has also declared the planned protests illegal and unlawful.

Heavy police presence is already being witnessed in some parts of the country, as security forces prepare to combat those who might defy the order against participating in any outlawed activity.

The October protests caused serious property destructions, with police being accused of executing may protesters.
