Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been impeached by the County Assembly after majority members voted to remove him from office. The decision followed a motion introduced by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, who accused the governor of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and making irregular appointments.
This marked the third attempt to remove him, reflecting the growing divisions within the Assembly and the ongoing disagreements over his leadership.
During the latest vote, 23 out of the 31 MCAs who participated supported the motion seeking to impeach the governor. Four members chose to abstain, and the rest did not support the removal.
With the majority backing the motion, the Assembly resolved to impeach Nyaribo, bringing an end to a long period of political tension and disputes that had become more visible in recent months.
The matter will now proceed to the Senate, which will review the charges and decide whether to uphold or overturn the impeachment.
This move adds to a series of impeachment efforts that have targeted the governor over the past few years.
In September last year, Nyaribo narrowly survived another attempt to remove him. During that vote, 22 MCAs supported the impeachment motion while 12 opposed it.
The motion failed because it did not reach the required two-thirds majority, and no member abstained, making the outcome very close.
The close margin showed that the Assembly was already deeply split over his leadership, with tensions playing out openly in the chambers.
A year before that, in September 2023, the governor also faced an impeachment bid that did not succeed. At that time, 18 MCAs voted against the motion while 16 supported it.
Once again, the motion failed to meet the threshold needed to remove the governor from office. The pattern of repeated attempts shows that disagreements over his administration have been ongoing, with different factions in the Assembly often clashing over how the county should be run.
The latest impeachment now marks a significant turning point for Nyamira County.
The final decision will determine whether Nyaribo leaves office permanently or is reinstated.
The county remains in a period of uncertainty, waiting for the Senateโs decision, which will greatly influence its political direction and administrative stability.
