Residents of Kabete have been left in shock following a violent attack at Kabete Vet Lab Secondary School that claimed the lives of two security guards. The chilling incident occurred on the night of Friday, October 17, as students were winding up rehearsals for the forthcoming KCSE exams.

The normally quiet school compound turned into a crime scene when a group of armed individuals broke in and unleashed terror on the guards before making away with school property.

Reports indicate that the attackers moved strategically and seemed to know the school’s layout very well. They broke into the staffroom and computer laboratory, targeting electronic equipment, including laptops and accessories.

Before leaving, they caused serious damage to the property and attempted to erase evidence by destroying the CCTV cameras. However, parts of the footage were retrieved, showing their movements before the cameras were smashed.

The school principal said he was alerted by a neighboring guard who heard strange noises coming from within the compound. On rushing to the scene, he found one guard lifeless and another lying in critical condition.

The injured guard was immediately taken to hospital but later died from his injuries. The school community is now struggling to come to terms with the loss, describing the two men as dedicated workers who had served the school diligently.

Police officers who visited the scene found several dropped computer parts, damaged CCTV equipment, and footprints believed to belong to the suspects.

According to preliminary investigations, the intruders may have been former students who were expelled earlier in the year for indiscipline. The police believe the timing of the attack was not a coincidence, noting that it came just days before the national examinations were set to begin.

A senior officer handling the case mentioned that detectives are reviewing the CCTV footage that managed to capture one suspect’s partially visible face. He added that the level of coordination during the attack suggests that it was carefully planned and executed.

So far, the police have launched an intensive manhunt for the culprits and appealed to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation.

The incident has triggered widespread fear and concern among teachers, students, and parents. Many residents have urged the government and education authorities to enhance night security in schools, especially during the examination season when criminal activities tend to rise.

Some have also called for better perimeter lighting and the installation of alarm systems to deter such attacks.

The bodies of the two guards were taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary for postmortem as detectives continue gathering evidence. The Kabete community is now demanding justice and hoping that those responsible will be arrested soon.

The brutal killing has not only robbed two families of their loved ones but also exposed growing insecurity in learning institutions that urgently needs to be addressed.
