Police operation in Kakamega nets drugs cigarettes and gas cylinders

Five suspects are in custody after being arrested in Kakamega during a police operation that targeted drug peddling and handling of stolen property.

The National Police Service confirmed that the five individuals were nabbed on August 16 in Kakamega Town after members of the public gave information that led to their capture.

Police said the operation was carefully planned and executed with the aim of dismantling networks involved in drug trafficking and other illegal activities in the region.

The five suspects were found in possession of a large haul of bhang estimated at 1,412 rolls, which police say was meant for distribution within Kakamega and its surroundings.

Alongside the drugs, officers also recovered uncustomed goods which included 16 packets of Oris cigarettes, 25 packets of Milano cigarettes, and one packet of Supermatch cigarettes. Investigations indicate that these items were smuggled into the country without following the required procedures, raising concerns about illegal trade and tax evasion. In addition to the drugs and cigarettes, police also recovered suspected stolen property.

Among the items found were three 6kg gas cylinders and assorted household goods believed to have been stolen from nearby areas. The recovery of these items suggests that the suspects may have been engaging in multiple forms of criminal activity, combining drug trafficking with handling stolen property.

The police are now working to establish the source of the items and whether there are other accomplices involved.

According to the police report, all the suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned in court today, Monday, August 18. They are expected to face charges related to drug possession, dealing in uncustomed goods, and handling stolen property.

The outcome of the court proceedings will determine the next course of action, but authorities say they will continue investigating to uncover more about the networks the suspects were part of.The National Police Service has emphasized its commitment to fighting narcotics, illicit trade, and criminal activities across the country.

In their statement, they noted that public cooperation played a major role in the successful arrest of the suspects. Police have encouraged members of the public to continue sharing information that can help in identifying and stopping individuals engaging in criminal activities.

The arrests in Kakamega reflect the ongoing struggle against drugs and illicit goods in Kenyan towns, where such substances continue to affect the youth and contribute to insecurity.

The authorities have assured residents that more operations will be carried out in the coming days to ensure communities remain safe and that illegal networks are dismantled. With the suspects set to face the law, the police hope that the case will serve as a warning to others involved in similar activities.
