Nelson Havi calls out Ruto for jailing youth demanding justice and accountability

Nelson Havi is now asking President William Ruto to take personal responsibility and ensure that young protestors arrested across the country are released without further delay.

In a direct appeal made during a radio interview on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the former Law Society of Kenya president said the charges being pushed by the state are not just weak but also a deep betrayal of the very constitution the government swore to protect.

Havi called the detention of these youths a painful injustice, accusing the Ministry of Interior of abusing the law to suppress young voices seeking accountability. He argued that instead of showing empathy, the state was reacting with punishment, a move he believes is politically unwise and morally wrong.

“President Ruto, you are a father, a leader, and a Christian. These children are not criminals. They are asking for justice, for truth, and for fairness,” he said. Havi insisted that the government doesn’t need a court order to release them, adding that the right thing should be done immediately and unconditionally.

He described the arrests as unconstitutional and labelled the treatment of protestors as a disgraceful act that contradicts the government’s repeated claims of respecting democracy. He warned that the continued persecution of these young voices would only widen the gap between the people and the state, weakening the public’s trust.

Havi also reminded Ruto of the Christian principles he frequently quotes. He said that a true Christian leader should be guided by compassion and humility, not retaliation and force.

Quoting scripture, he challenged the president to reflect on Jesus’ teachings about giving bread when a child asks, not a stone or a serpent.

In his message, Havi made it clear that the young people out in the streets are not enemies of the state but citizens crying out to be heard. He urged the president to act like the father he claims to be and restore their freedom.
