“Desperate People Do Desperate Things” Gachagua Hits Back At Ruto’s Government Over Teargas Attack

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a stinging attack on President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of desperation and failing to meet Kenyans’ immediate needs.

Gachagua decried the use of tear gas by police, citing the government’s fear of losing public support.

The ex-DP was addressing the press at the home of former Senator Cleophas Malala before attending the Malala Cup finals.

“A police officer threw teargas at us, but the meeting went on. Wananchi [ordinary citizens] protected the event, and nothing stopped us,” Gachagua said.

“Desperate people do desperate things, and this regime has nothing to offer the people of Kenya.”

Gachagua had to flee for his life on Saturday after a teargas canister was thrown and detonated a few metres from where he was seated with other leaders.

The celebration event for Shamata Ward MCA Gitau Njamba in Nyandarua was disrupted and rapidly escalated into a riot, leaving several people hurt and the police overwhelmed by an enraged mob.

He highlighted important challenges such as increased abductions, high living costs, and inadequate economic management, accusing the government of failing to give remedies.

“There are so many questions they cannot answer. Instead, they resort to desperate acts like trying to stop our meetings,” he added.

The former deputy president also hinted at a political realignment ahead of the 2027 election.

He indicated that he is in talks with other leaders, notably DAP-K Party head Eugene Wamalwa, to set a course for “responsible leadership.”

“Every leader has a responsibility to bring their people together. I am doing that, Eugene and others are doing the same,” Gachagua stated.“

In the new year, we will have a conversation about creating a framework for responsible leadership. This is an ongoing process.”

DAP-K Party chairman Eugene Wamalwa expressed similar concerns, adding that some people had been taken for their social media posts critical of the government’s leadership.

His host, Cleophas Malala, stated that they were now in opposition, accusing Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula of being sellouts.
