“Why Go To China” Raila Speaks Criticises The Following Presidents For Attending The Beijing Summit

Raila Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has voiced his discontent with the decision by numerous African heads of state to attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit in Beijing, China.

Speaking to a crowd in Bondo, Siaya County, Odinga questioned the necessity for over 40 African leaders to travel to China for the summit.

His comments reflect a broader critique of the dynamics in Africa’s diplomatic relationships with global powers, particularly China.

Odinga argued that the current state of these relations reflects Africa’s diminished diplomatic leverage, stating that African leaders are not utilizing the continent’s full potential on the international stage.

According to him, Africa is not acting with the authority and influence it deserves.

He suggested that rather than African leaders traveling abroad for summits, global powers like China should be the ones taking the initiative to engage African leaders on the continent itself.

By doing so, he believes Africa could establish a more balanced and dignified relationship with its international partners.

This statement is part of a broader vision Odinga has shared, one where African countries assert more control over their international engagements.

He hinted that once he assumes the role of African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, he would push for reforms that reshape Africa’s standing in global politics.

Odinga’s leadership aspirations for the AUC have become increasingly apparent, as he continues to present himself as a transformative leader who can bring about continental reforms.
