“The Poor Will Rise” Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka Tells President William Ruto Threatening National Protests Call

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stated that the opposition will call for nationwide protests against the new university funding model.

Kalonzo stated that they will lead protests if the government implements the new funding model.

The university funding model was unveiled on May 3, 2024, with President William Ruto promoting it as an equalizer in the education sector.

However, Kalonzo claims that the funding model is designed to deny local Kenyans access to education.

“This administration has no idea on how to go about it, we will mobilise the country to say no if we are going to make university education only for the rich and not for the poor. The poor will rise and claim their position,” the Wiper leader said.

At the same time, DAP-K party leader Eugen Wamalwa stated that they will pursue justice for university students.

Parents and students have spoken out against the new university funding model, claiming it promotes inequality.

On Sunday, the President defended the funding, citing the banding in the new model existed before.

The President stated that he has added one band to the previously existing four bands, bringing the total to five.

The new funding model divides students into five bands.

The funding framework replaces the Differentiated Unit Cost (DUC), which was previously used to fund universities.

Ruto stated that it also promotes the availability and accessibility of high-quality higher education, as well as ensuring that all students are treated fairly and adequately based on their financial circumstances.

The President stated that parents and students who have been assigned to a band to which they do not belong will have the opportunity to appeal, and that those in the incorrect band will be corrected.

According to Ruto, at least 134,000 students applied for funding, and 26,000 filed appeals because they were placed in a band to which they did not belong.

The President also stated that those who appealed would receive feedback within two weeks.

“Every student or parent who appealed the banding in the new funding model will get their responses if they supplied the information and corrected the information in the portal,” he said.

The President stated that mistakes may have occurred during the keying in of information in cyberspace.
