Former CS Aisha Jumwa Faces Legal Battle Over Ksh250 Million House Purchase

Former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa is currently facing a legal battle with Bejav Furniture Limited over a Ksh250 million house she purchased last year.

The dispute centers on a Ksh60 million debt that Jumwa allegedly owes the company, which claims that she has failed to meet her payment obligations.

The conflict began when Jumwa, who was appointed as a Cabinet Secretary on October 27, 2022, entered into negotiations to purchase the house from Roselyn Wambui just four months later.

The initial asking price for the property was Ksh250 million, but after negotiations, it was reduced to Ksh215 million.

Wambui has since stated that Jumwa’s lawyer acknowledged receiving the sale agreement and assured her that Jumwa had secured financing for the purchase.

“I instructed my advocate, Kinyanjui Kirimi and Company Advocates, to draft the sale agreement and send it to the defendant’s advocate, the firm of Mohamoud, Gitau & Jilo LLP Advocates, which was done on February 25, 2023,” Wambui explained.

However, it soon emerged that Jumwa was only able to secure a Ksh145 million loan from Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) at that time.

This left a significant shortfall, and Bejav Furniture Limited is now seeking to recover the remaining Ksh60 million, plus interest, which Wambui insists should be charged at a rate of 18.5 percent until the full amount is paid.

The case, which initially sought to have Jumwa declared bankrupt, has been referred for mediation in an effort to resolve the matter outside of court.

The mediation process will involve both parties discussing the issue with a neutral third party in an attempt to reach a mutually agreeable solution.

The situation highlights the financial challenges and potential legal consequences that can arise from high-value property transactions, particularly when large loans are involved.

Jumwa’s case has drawn public attention not only because of her high-profile position but also due to the substantial amounts of money at stake.

It remains to be seen whether an agreement will be reached or if the case will return to the courts.

The outcome could have significant implications for Jumwa, both financially and in terms of her public image.
