The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has issued a warning to American citizens about potential protests scheduled for Thursday, August 8.
According to the embassy’s statement, even seemingly peaceful protests have the potential to escalate into violence, citing past instances where law enforcement used tear gas and live ammunition.
“Protests are anticipated in Kenya on August 8. Even those that appear peaceful can quickly turn violent. Past responses have included water cannons, tear gas, and occasionally live ammunition,” the statement indicated.
The embassy also highlighted reports of opportunistic crimes, such as robberies and assaults, occurring on the fringes of these protests.
American citizens were advised that roadblocks by crowds have occurred previously, which may lead to traffic disruptions.
The embassy recommended several safety measures for American citizens.
These include avoiding crowds and protest sites, keeping vehicle doors locked and windows up, informing friends and family of their location and safety, reviewing personal security plans, and carrying a copy of their U.S. passport along with a current Kenyan visa.
Additionally, Americans were urged to stay alert, monitor local media for updates, and be aware of their surroundings.
The embassy announced that its offices will be closed on August 8 for routine services.
“To exercise caution, the Consular Section will be closed on August 8. In case of emergencies, American citizens should reach out to kenya_acs@state.gov,” the embassy noted.
This alert precedes the ‘Nane Nane’ protest march scheduled for the same day.
The term “Nane Nane” means “eight eight” in Swahili, referring to the date of the protest.
These protests are often organized to address various political and social issues in Kenya.
The U.S. Embassy’s warning is a reminder of the importance of staying informed and prepared during times of potential unrest.
