A tense standoff broke out in Gachie, Kiambu County, as residents camped at Kihara Police Station, demanding the release of relief food.
Since 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, irate residents have surrounded the station, demanding the immediate distribution of food aid that has been held there for more than six months.
Videos circulating online depict the residents’ rage and frustration as they stormed the police station on Wednesday, demanding the food’s release.
Their patience has been tested by the prolonged delay in distributing critical supplies intended for flood victims.
The residents urged local MP John Njuguna, also known as Kawanjiku, to speed up the distribution process.
Despite their appeals, the situation remained unresolved on Wednesday and Saturday.
On Saturday, rumors circulated that the MP intended to relocate the food from the police station.
Determined to prevent this, a group of residents arrived at the station at dawn.
MP Njuguna Wanjiku eventually arrived at the station to address the agitated crowd.
He announced on his social media platform, “I am pleased to announce that we have reached a consensus on the modalities to ensure everyone who deserves it benefits.
The distribution will commence next week.”
However, this announcement did little to alleviate residents’ concerns. They returned to the police station and demanded immediate action.
The food, as well as other supplies like blankets and mattresses, were donated earlier this year by the government and well-wishers to assist vulnerable flood victims.
It has been in storage for months, causing increasing frustration among those in need.
Non-governmental organisations involved in the donation defended the delays, citing the need for thorough packing and distribution preparations.
In response to mounting pressure, these organisations have agreed to distribute the food next week.
