Embakasi East MP Babu Owino Maps Out Opposition Path After Raila Aligns with Ruto

Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, commonly known as Babu Owino, has assumed a significant role in Kenya’s opposition landscape.

On Tuesday, Owino declared himself the new leader in opposition matters following Azimio party leader Raila Odinga’s recent call for dialogue with the government.

Babu Owino emphasized his commitment to the opposition cause, positioning himself as a key figure in holding the government accountable.

“I will continue playing the role of opposition, keeping checks and balances on this defunct government under the doctrine of separation of powers, checks and balances as opined by Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède de Montesquieu in the 17th century,” he stated.

Owino’s declaration comes in the wake of Raila Odinga’s surprising support for President William Ruto’s initiative to create a multi-sectoral forum to address the pressing issues raised by Kenyans.

During a joint press meeting with Ruto and other leaders, Odinga stressed the importance of dialogue to find lasting solutions to the country’s problems.

“We have agreed we give people an opportunity to be heard, express themselves, and come out with the grievances that are ailing our country today so that a lasting solution can be found,” Odinga stated. This move by Odinga has sparked a mix of reactions.

Babu Owino, a staunch critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration, reiterated his commitment to his political philosophy of accountability.

In a separate tweet, he labeled the current government as ‘useless’ and vowed to continue his opposition efforts.

“Gen Z’s will send Ruto into political oblivion, which is the entombment of the unworthy into their own dust of nothingness,” he wrote on July 6.

Raila Odinga Jr., the opposition leader’s son, also weighed in on the situation, hinting at differing political views from his father.

This rift within the opposition camp has raised questions about the future direction of Kenya’s political landscape.

Many Kenyans have expressed their disappointment with Raila Odinga’s decision to support President Ruto, viewing it as a betrayal.

They argue that dialogue alone will not address the critical issues facing the nation.

Despite this, some leaders have backed Odinga’s move, believing that a collaborative approach is necessary to navigate the current crisis.

As the political dynamics shift, Babu Owino’s assertion of leadership within the opposition highlights the ongoing struggle for accountability and effective governance in Kenya.

His resolve to continue the fight against what he perceives as a failing government underscores the contentious and evolving nature of Kenyan politics.
