“Hatuna Option” UDA Pointman Finally Reveals The Following After Planned Pay Cut To Reduce Public Expenditure

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has expressed his willingness to take a pay cut in an effort to curb public expenditure amid Kenya’s current economic crisis.

Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday, July 3, Cheruiyot urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to reject the annual pay increase proposed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for the financial year 2024/2025.

The SRC’s new monthly compensation structure for state officers, effective from July 1, includes salary increments for various government officials.

Under this new structure, Cheruiyot’s salary as the majority leader in the Senate was increased to KSh 800,019, matching the salary of Kimani Ichung’wah, the majority leader in the National Assembly.

However, Cheruiyot has called on his colleagues to decline these raises in light of the nation’s financial challenges.

“If it means taking a pay cut, we as Members of Parliament have been told that we will never do it. We don’t have an option; we must do it. The yearly increment that is being discussed, I saw it being reported or misreported that we are now going to earn more; SRC continues to be silent about it. We must make a resolution and say that we reject even that one in light of the financial situation,” Cheruiyot stated.

The SRC’s proposal includes increasing MPs’ and senators’ salaries to KSh 739,600 from KSh 725,502 in the 2024/2025 financial year.

Leaders such as Kimani Ichung’wah and Opiyo Wandayi, the minority leader, will see their salaries rise to KSh 800,019.

Meanwhile, the speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate, Moses Wetang’ula and Amason Kingi respectively, will receive a gross salary of KSh 1,208,362, up from KSh 1,185,327.

The pay increases extend beyond parliamentarians.

All 22 Cabinet Secretaries, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, and Attorney General Justin Muturi will see their salaries rise to KSh 990,000 from KSh 957,000.

Governors will earn the same amount as Cabinet Secretaries, while Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) will experience a salary bump from KSh 154,481 to KSh 164,588.
