Breaking News: EACC Arrests NITA Director General and Key Officials in Ksh. 28 Million Corruption Scandal

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended several high-ranking officials from the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) due to their alleged involvement in a significant corruption scandal.

Among the detained is Mr. Stephen Ogenga, the Director General of NITA, who, along with others, is accused of irregularly awarding a Ksh. 28 million tender for the supply, installation, and maintenance of sewing and training machines during the financial year 2017/2018.

The EACC’s investigation led to the arrests of Mr. James Waweru and Ms. Sheila Wambui Nyakinyua, directors of Xponics Limited, the company implicated in the tender irregularities.

“The Commission conducted investigations and upon conclusion, the Commission submitted the files to the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) who upon independent review concurred with the recommendation of the Commission to charge the suspects,” stated the EACC.

In addition to these arrests, Elizabeth Ochieng was detained for allegedly attempting to obstruct EACC officers during the arrest of Mr. Stephen Ogenga.

“In her case, appropriate action will be taken upon conclusion of the investigation,” the EACC declared, indicating ongoing scrutiny of her actions during the arrest process.

The detained individuals face charges under various sections of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003.

The charges include conspiracy to commit corruption, abuse of office, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

These serious accusations reflect the government’s commitment to tackling corruption within its institutions.

The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, where they will answer to the charges laid against them.

This development marks a significant step in the fight against corruption in Kenya, showcasing the EACC’s dedication to holding public officials accountable for their actions.

The alleged corruption scandal has highlighted the ongoing challenges within Kenya’s public sector regarding transparency and accountability.

The irregular award of tenders and the subsequent mismanagement of public funds continue to undermine public trust in government institutions.

The EACC’s decisive action in this case is a critical move towards restoring integrity and ensuring that public resources are used appropriately.

As the case unfolds, it will be closely watched by the public and other stakeholders keen on seeing justice served.

The EACC’s efforts in this investigation reinforce the importance of robust anti-corruption measures and the need for continual vigilance in the fight against corruption.

The upcoming arraignment will be a pivotal moment in this high-profile case, potentially setting a precedent for future anti-corruption efforts in Kenya.
