The Government Spokesperson has revealed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta received a substantial lump sum payment of Sh48 million, representing one year’s salary for each of the two terms he served as President of Kenya.
This disclosure aims to address and dispel recent rumors regarding the withholding of Kenyatta’s retirement benefits, including his pension.
On Friday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza administration, led by President William Ruto, is committed to adhering to the law and the constitution without compromise.
Mwaura underscored the administration’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations to all retired state officials, including former presidents, vice presidents, and the former prime minister.
Contrary to circulating reports, Mwaura assured the public that the government has consistently honored its commitments under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.
“The Kenya Kwanza government is firmly against the weaponization of state resources,” Mwaura stated. “
The Act mandates that former presidents receive pensions and other retirement benefits after leaving office.”In addition to the lump sum payment, Mwaura detailed that Kenyatta receives a monthly pension of Sh1.6 million.
He is also provided with tax-exempt monthly allowances totaling Sh1 million, covering expenses such as entertainment, housing, fuel, and utilities like water, electricity, and telephone services.
These allowances ensure that the former president maintains a standard of living befitting his previous office.Furthermore, Kenyatta benefits from comprehensive medical and hospital coverage worth Sh20 million annually.
This coverage extends to both local and overseas treatment for himself and his spouse, ensuring their healthcare needs are met without financial strain.
The government also funds a fully furnished and maintained office space of Kenyatta’s choice. This provision enables the former president to continue any personal or public engagements from a well-supported office environment.
Kenyatta is entitled to two new cars of his choice, which are replaceable every three years. These vehicles must have an engine capacity of at least 3000cc, ensuring they meet the standards suitable for a former head of state.
This clarification by the Government Spokesperson aims to reassure the public that the Kenya Kwanza administration is upholding its legal and constitutional responsibilities regarding the benefits of retired leaders.
