Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Reveals Stand on Planned Demolition of Businesses in Gikomba

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has called on President William Ruto’s administration to adhere strictly to legal procedures in light of the planned demolitions of businesses in Gikomba.

The renowned politician expressed concerns over the negative impact such actions could have on the citizens who supported the government during the 2022 campaigns.

Sonko emphasized the need for a compassionate and lawful approach to the situation, stating, “In as much as we support the government of the day, my humble opinion is that His Excellency, the president, should stop the ongoing demolitions in Nairobi, including Gikomba market, until the government puts measures in place to ensure all the affected traders are compensated as provided for in the Constitution.”

His remarks highlight the importance of upholding constitutional rights and ensuring fair treatment for those affected by the demolitions.

The planned demolitions have sparked significant controversy and criticism from various political figures.

Among them are Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Honorable Babu Owino, and notable Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party politician, Honorable Robert Alai.

Both have voiced strong opposition to the government’s approach under President Ruto.Babu Owino, commenting on the widespread demolition of houses in different parts of the country, lamented the government’s failure to provide alternative accommodations for the displaced residents.

“It is so unfortunate that the same government is not giving these Kenyans a place to stay,” he said, underscoring the hardship and displacement faced by many citizens due to the demolitions.

The Gikomba market, a vital hub for traders in Nairobi, has long been a focal point of economic activity.

The planned demolitions threaten the livelihoods of numerous small business owners and traders who rely on the market for their income.

The calls from Sonko, Owino, and Alai reflect broader concerns about the social and economic implications of the government’s actions.

The situation brings to light the broader issue of urban development and the often-contentious balance between modernization efforts and the rights of residents.

Critics argue that without adequate compensation and resettlement plans, such demolitions can exacerbate poverty and social instability.

Sonko’s appeal to the government emphasizes the need for a more humane and legally sound approach to urban planning and development.

By ensuring that all affected traders are compensated in accordance with the Constitution, the government can mitigate the adverse effects of its actions and uphold the trust of the citizens who supported them.

The ongoing demolitions in Nairobi, particularly in Gikomba market, have ignited a significant political and social debate.

The calls for lawful and compassionate action from figures like Mike Sonko, Babu Owino, and Robert Alai highlight the critical need for the government to balance development goals with the welfare and rights of its citizens.
