Outsourcing or exploitation? How Mkopa profits while workers suffer in silence

Workers at Mkopa Ltd are facing tough working conditions, according to complaints shared by employees.

Sources reveal that despite signing contracts for an 8-hour workday with a payment of Ksh 740 per day, they are forced to work 9-hour shifts without any overtime compensation.

This situation has created frustration among employees who feel exploited and ignored.

The situation is even worse for night shift workers.

These employees reportedly endure gruelling 12-hour shifts, working from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., without any form of overtime pay or official communication from management.

Many feel that their long hours and hard work go unrecognized, adding to their dissatisfaction.

One worker shared their experience anonymously: “ I want to talk to you about Mkopa Ltd. We are outsourced, but the work environment is extremely toxic. We signed contracts for 8-hour shifts, but the company timeline is 9 hours.

That means we have an extra hour of unpaid overtime every day.

Considering how little we are paid in this tough economy, it’s really unfair.”

The worker went on to explain that despite raising their concerns repeatedly, nothing has changed. “We complained until we gave up,” they said.

They also mentioned issues with the human resources department of the outsourcing company, hinting at mismanagement and poor handling of employee grievances.

Employees are frustrated not just by the long hours but also by the lack of respect for labor rights.

They feel that their complaints fall on deaf ears, and management’s lack of response only adds to the toxic environment.

Many continue to work there because they have no other options in the difficult job market.

This situation highlights the ongoing struggle for fair treatment and proper compensation faced by many outsourced workers in Kenya.

The failure to address these issues has left employees feeling overworked and undervalued.

They are calling for immediate action to ensure they receive fair compensation for their work and better treatment at the workplace.

Until these concerns are addressed, Mkopa Ltd faces mounting criticism for its failure to respect labor contracts and support its workforce.

Workers hope that by speaking out, they can push for meaningful change and ensure that their rights are protected.
